Study 1: In this clinical trial, 44 healthy Japanese women with epidermal (outer layer of the skin) dehydration was orally administered 40 mg ORYZA CERAMIDE® or placebo for 12 weeks. After 12 weeks, the cheek trans epidermal water loss (TEWL) was determined. In addition, the TEWL on a different part of the skin and various skin parameters were measured before and after 4, 8 and 23 weeks of the intervention. Results showed that oral administration of ORYZA CERAMIDE® for 4 weeks significantly reduced the cheek TEWL. Meanwhile, lip moisture and visible pore number were improved 12 weeks and 4 weeks, respectively. These improvements may be attributed to an increase in epidermal ceramides, suggesting the beneficial effect of ORYZA CERAMIDE® in improving skin conditions.
Study 2: In this clinical trial, healthy volunteers were orally administered 40 mg/day ORYZA CERAMIDE® or placebo for 3 weeks and changes in skin parameters were evaluated using 5-scale questionnaire. Compared to baseline, there was remarkable improvement in skin smoothness, tension, dryness and roughness, suggesting the beautifying effects of ORYZA CERAMIDE®.

In this in vitro study, the effect of elastic amide on skin ceramide in 3D model was determined. Elastic amide up-regulated the expression of glucosylceramide synthase (GCS), which is the enzyme involved in ceramide synthesis. This would result in an increased content of skin ceramide, which is associated with an improvement of trans epidermal water loss.

Study 1: In this in vitro study, the effect of ORYZA CERAMIDE® on melanogenesis (production of melanin or dark pigment) was examined using cultured B16 melanomal cells. Compared to well-known skin whitening agents, which are ascorbic acid, arbutin and ellagic acid, ORYZA CERAMIDE® was more potent in inhibiting melanogenesis. This findingsuggests that skin whitening effct is achievable with daily consumption of ORYZA CERAMIDE®.
Study 2: Glycosphingolipids are composed of ceramide and sugar chains. In this in vitro study, mice melanocytes (melanin-producing cells) were incubated in medium containing glycosphingolipids sourced from rice. The cells were then lysed and absorbanced was measured at wavelength of 405 nm to determine melanin production. These rice-derived glycoshingolipids showed inhibitory effect on melanin production in a dose-depedenet manner, suggesting the promising application of the glycosphingolipid on skin whitening.

Study 1: In this in vitro study, the moisturising effects of ORYZA CERAMIDE® was compared with other commercially available ceramides derived from Konnyaku (konjac) or wheat. ORYZA CERAMIDE® showed the most excellent moisturizing effect.
Study 2: In this study, hairless mice treated with 10% sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were administered ORYZA CERAMIDE® for 9 days and trans epidermal water loss (marker of skin’s barrier function) was measured. SDS is a well-known skin irritant, which penetrates into the skin and disrupts skin barrier as well as resulting in lower skin hydration. The administration of ORYZA CERAMIDE® significantly reduced trans epidermal water loss compared to control.
Study 3: In this in vitro study, human epidermal 3D model was used to determine the effect of elastic amide on trans epidermal water loss (TEWL). Elastic amide improves TEWL of 3D model in a dose-dependent manner, with significant improvement at 10 μg/mL elastic amide.

Study 1: In this study, mice were orally administered with rice-derived glycosphingolipid (0, 0.15, 0.30 and 0.50%) for 3 days and compound 48/80 solution was injected intradermally on the cervical skin to induce scratching action. The number of scratching was counted 30 minutes after they started to scratch themselves. Results showed that administration of glycopshingolioids decreased scratching action of mice in a dose-dependent manner.
Study 2: In atopic dermatitis, mast cells were found to undergo degranulation, releasing histamine that causes itchiness. In this in vitro study, the effect of glycosphingolipid derived from rice, wheat, Konnyaku and corn on mast cell degranulation were examined in RBL-2H3 mast cells. Compared to other glycosphingolipids, glycosphingolipids derived from rice has the strongest effect in suppressing mast cell degranulation.
