Acid reflux is a condition where stomach acid flows upwards into the esophagus (the tube that delivers food and beverages to your stomach). It is often associated with Heartburn where you feel discomfort in the chest.

Many foods are responsible for triggering a heartburn. They cause the lower esophageal sphincter to relax, which results in stomach acid flowing upwards into the esophagus. These are some of the foods that you should avoid if you experience heartburn.

1. Tea/Coffee

Caffeine in tea and coffee stimulates the secretion of gastric acid and could affect the functioning of the esophagus. It causes the lower esophageal sphincter to relax and the distal esophagus to contract, and results in a reflux of chyme (fluid mass of partially digested food) to the esophagus along with the gastric acid.

2. Peppermint

Peppermint relaxes the stomach muscles and lower esophageal sphincter, which causes more acid reflux.

3. Spicy Foods

Capsaicin which is present in chillies stimulates the intestines and stomach, causing excessive secretion of gastric acid and increasing the chances of an acid reflux.

4. Garlic

Garlic contains allicin which can cause strong irritation to the gastric mucosa and intestinal wall, when eaten on an empty stomach. This too, can trigger an acid reflux.

5. Alcohol

Consuming a moderate to excessive amounts of alcoholic beverages, especially wine and beer, can increase your production of stomach acid and the risk of heartburn.

6. High-Fat Foods

High-fat foods may also cause heartburn. Unfortunately, this includes those healthy and nutritious foods such as avocados, cheese and nuts. High-fat foods stimulate the release of the hormone cholecystokinin (CCK) which relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter and cause acid reflux.
