The prostate is a walnut-sized gland of the male reproductive system, located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. Most men would be concerned when faced with health issues such as frequent urination or an enlarged prostate due to benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) or prostatitis.

The best plan to prevent prostate problems is a healthy lifestyle. However, there are also many natural ways to improve your prostate health even if you already have some symptoms or are diagnosed with a prostate condition. Here are some tips for you:

1. Eat whole grains, more fruits and vegetables

Choose whole wheat pasta and bread over white bread and noodles. Make sure to eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day, including agricultural products that are high in lycopene (a powerful antioxidant), such as red peppers and tomatoes. Fruits and vegetables that contain lycopene are red and studies have confirmed that they are cancer-fighting foods. All in all, the darker and brighter the color of agricultural products, the better.

2. Reduce sodium intake

Want to reduce your sodium intake? The best way is to eat fresh produce, dairy products and meat. Avoid eating pre-packaged, canned and frozen foods. Salt is often used as a preservative, so pre-packaged foods usually contain high amount of salt. Nowadays, most food labels are required to indicate the sodium (salt) content and the percentage of the recommended daily intake. Take time to read and compare food labels. World Health Organization recommends for adults to consume no more than 5 grams of sodium (less than 1 teaspoon) per day. 5 grams include the sodium present in the food itself such as soy sauce, fish sauce and/or any other seasonings.

3. Eat good fats and avoid bad fats

Reduce intake of saturated fats found in animal and dairy products. Switch to healthy fats such as olive oil, nuts, and avocados. Animal products such as meat, butter, and lard are high in saturated fat and are associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer. Avoid eating fast food and most processed foods. They usually contain partially hydrogenated fats (Trans fats), which are very unhealthy.

4. Know your family history

If an immediate male relative (such as a father or brother) had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, your risk of cancer will also increase significantly. In fact, the risk is more than twice that of others! If anyone in your family suffers from prostate cancer, you must inform your doctor so as to work out a comprehensive prevention plan and regular screening.

5. Exercise regularly

Exercising regularly not only helps to reduce the risk of certain cancers, but also prevents other health problems, including depression, heart disease and stroke. There are no conclusive studies on whether there is a correlation between exercise and prostate health, but current research showed that exercise can help maintain prostate health.

6. Reduce alcohol, caffeine and sugar intake

You only need to limit your caffeine intake, you don't have to quit it altogether. For example, limit yourself to 120 to 240 millilitres of coffee per day. The same goes for alcohol, limit to drinking two glasses a week.

7. Stop smoking

Smoking is known to contribute to some of the leading causes of death in men. The carbon monoxide in tobacco attaches itself to the red blood cells until the cells die, leading to the development of prostate cancer and other diseases. Quit smoking if you are a smoker now! You may wish to consult your doctor for ‘quit plan’.
