Heartburn is a burning and painful feeling felt around the middle of chest. It happens when gastric juices flow backward, up into oesophagus. In fact, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy identifies obesity as the leading cause of frequent heartburn. This is because excessive body weight increases abdominal pressure, causing stomach acid leakage or backflow more likely to happen. Hence, it is important for those who are suffering from heartburn to maintain healthy weight or lose weight to prevent heartburn.
