In Singapore, 19 people die from cardiovascular diseases (heart diseases and stroke) daily. With cardiovascular diseases accounting for 31.7% of all deaths in 2020. This means that almost 1 out of 3 deaths in Singapore, is due to heart diseases or stroke.

Therefore, do neglect any symptoms such as chest pain, as it is the most common symptom of coronary artery disease. Especially with the increasing prevalence of cardiovascular disease in Singapore.

That being said, not all chest pain is a symptom of a heart problem. There are also many other possible causes that totally may be unrelated to your heart. While some causes of chest pain can be due to serious conditions, most are not life threatening. You can learn more about the many potential causes of chest pain and the other symptoms here.

1. Lung disease

Symptom characteristics:  The point of pain is not very obvious and may be accompanied by other symptoms such as cough.

Pulmonary diseases can only cause pain when it affects the pleura or compresses the nerves, so the symptoms of pain are not obvious. In addition, pneumonia is caused by bacterial infections, fungal infections, or tuberculosis. Due to the accumulation of sputum in the lungs, there will be a feeling of chest tightness but some of them will be accompanied by coughing, easy wheezing and difficulty in breathing.

2. Gastrointestinal disease

Symptom characteristics: There will be a sensation of stuffiness and heartburn, like something is burning in the chest and abdomen.

Gastroesophageal reflux is one of the common causes of chest pain, because the stomach acid flows upwards from the esophagus to the mouth, and in the process could cause damage to the esophagus. The results in a burning sensation at the abdomen and chest. Patients often feel more uncomfortable after eating, sitting or lying down.

3. Psychological factors (anxiety)

Symptom characteristics: The point of pain is not very obvious and can be felt on and off.

Psychological factors like anxiety is also one of the reasons that may cause chest tightness and chest pain. This is because anxious people are particularly susceptible to hints. When they see symptoms of one disease, they will think that they have succumbed to the disease, and symptoms will appear correspondingly.

If the disease cannot be detected, but you are disturbed by this, consider checking the autonomic nervous system to see if there is any disorder of the autonomic nervous system.

4. Muscle strain

Symptom characteristics: There are obvious points of pain and it will be more painful when there is a change in posture or movement.

If you try to complete the exercise with the wrong posture or exceeding the loadable muscle strength, it may cause muscle strain. And this kind of pain belongs to "body surface pain", so the pain point can be clearly felt. If changing the posture will make it more or less painful, it is very likely caused by a muscle strain.

5. Heart disease

Symptom characteristics: There is a sense of stuffiness but the pain is not obvious, the pain will not be reduced or increased after changing the posture.

The most special pain of myocardial infarction is that the "clear point" of pain cannot be identified, and the pain will not be more painful or less painful after changing to a different posture. The most obvious symptom is actually when doing exercises and the heart is beating faster, there will be pain and pain nearby. If you always feel chest pain after exercise, you may need to check the related functions of the heart. Aortic dissection is a very serious problem, almost reaching the level of vascular rupture. Therefore, if the back or chest suddenly feels sharp pain like being torn or something cutting through, you must go to the emergency department or the cardiology department as soon as possible.
