Studies have shown that people who have tested positive for the virus have an increased risk of developing blood clots. However the new study in the BMJ medical journal shows that the threat can linger for up to six months after getting infected, even in mild cases.


Researchers have compared data from more than a million people in Sweden's national registries who contracted the virus from February 2020 to May 2021, with a control group of over four million who did not test positive.


After being infected, they found an increased risk of:

  • blood clots in the leg, or deep vein thrombosis (DVT), for up to three months
  • blood clots in the lungs, or pulmonary embolism, for up to six months
  • internal bleeding, such as a stroke, for up to two months


When the researchers compared the risks of blood clots, they found that:

  • 4 in every 10,000 infected with the virus developed DVT as compared with 1 in every 10,000 for people who never contracted the virus.
  • About 17 in every 10,000 infected with the virus had a blood clot in the lung. This is a higher probability than those who never had contracted the virus, with a probability of lesser than 1 in every 10,000.


People who have fallen to the pandemic have an increased likelihood of their blood cells clumping together, forming clots. While large blood clots can cause heart attacks and strokes, it is believed that much of the heart damage caused by the virus stems from the very small clots that block tiny blood vessels (capillaries) in the heart muscle. Other parts of the body that can be compromised because of blood clots include the lungs, legs, liver, and kidneys. The virus can also weaken blood vessels and cause them to leak. This may contribute to potentially long-lasting problems with the liver and kidneys.
