Study 1: In this clinical trial, patients with wet or dry eye conditions were orally administered 30 mg/day saffron or placebo for 6 months. At 3 months after saffron administration, there was a significant increase in electroretinography (ERG) results (p = 0.027), which measures the electrical response of the light-sensitive cells in the eyes. At the follow-up, patients with wet eye conditions administered saffron showed a significant decrease in optical coherence tomography (OCT) results, which is used for early diagnosis of various serious eye conditions. These findings suggest saffron supplementation may help support retinal function in patients with these eye conditions.

Study 2: In this clinical trial, patients with early vision changes were orally administered 20 mg/day saffron or placebo for 3 months, followed by a switch to placebo or saffron for an additional 3 months. Focal electroretinograms (ERG), which measure the functional integrity of the central macula, were recorded after the 3-month supplementation period. Compared to placebo, saffron supplementation resulted in a significant increase in the amplitude of focal ERG. Additionally, focal ERG thresholds decreased after saffron supplementation, while no changes were observed in the placebo group. These findings suggest that saffron supplementation may help support retinal flicker sensitivity in individuals with early vision changes.
