THC is highly safe

In the clinical trial, 300mg of THC was administered to 20 healthy human volunteers once daily for 28 days and 15 vital parameters were evaluated. Results showed that THC was safe for oral administration:

Q: What is the difference between turmeric, curcuminoids, curcumin and tetrahydrocurcumin (THC)?
A: Turmeric is a bright yellow spice powder that derives from the root of a plant known as Curcuma longa. Curcuminoids are a family of active compounds within turmeric, this includes curcumin (major constituent), demethoxycurcumin (DMC) and bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC). Tetrahydrocurcumin (THC) is a product converted from curcumin by enzyme's action of E. coli bacteria. In the human body, curcumin in the intestines is converted into THC by E. coli and that the produced THC is responsible for various psychological activities in the body. THC was found to be more potent than curcumin in different aspects, including antioxidative activity.


Q: Curcumin is known to have low bioavailability. What is bioavailability and how does FlexC MAX EX overcome this?
A: Bioavailability refers to the capability of a nutrient in having an active effect on the body after it has been introduced via blood circulation. The low bioavailability of curcumin is mainly caused by low water solubility, poor absorption by the body and rapid metabolism and excretion from the body. Instead of curcumin, FlexC MAX EX is formulated with tetradhydrocurcumin (THC), the body-ready form of curcumin, which has higher absorption and bioavailability than curcumin. Research-proven Health Benefits of Key Ingredients

1) Support healthy inflammatory response in joints

Study 1: Human leukocyte elastase (HLE) is known to trigger inflammation and pain within the joints. It has been suggested to attribute to rheumatoid arthritis due to its aggressive and destructive properties. In this in vitro study, boswellic acid AKBA was found to significantly inhibit HLE, thereby reducing joint inflammation and pain.

Study 2: In an in vitro study, Boswellia serrata extract was found to significantly reduced and normalised the production of pro-inflammatory factors - nuclear transcription factor κB (NF- κB), tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in cartilage cells.

 Study 3: NF-ĸB is the master regulator of inflammation and plays a role in a wide variety of pathological conditions. In an in vitro study, cells were pre-incubated with curcumin for 60 minutes followed by PMA or H2O2 for 30 minutes and then tested for NF-ĸB activation. Curcumin was found to completely block PMA and H2O2-induced activation of NF-ĸB, indicating curcumin is a general suppressor of NF-ĸB activation.

Study 4: Interleukin (IL)-6 (IL6) and prostaglandin E(PGE2) promote inflammation and play a role in the development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In an in vitro study, anti-inflammatory activity of piperine was tested on interleukin 1β (IL1β)-stimulated synovial cells derived from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Piperine was shown to suppress the production of IL-6 and PGE2 in a dose-dependent manner. 

 

2) Support joint comfort & active mobility

Study 1: In a clinical trial, 49 subjects with knee osteoarthritis were orally administered either 1.125g MSM or placebo 3 times daily for 12 weeks. Taking MSM for 12 weeks showed an improvement in pain, stiffness and physical function.

Study 2: In a clinical trial, 100 patients with hip and/or knee osteoarthritis were orally administered a daily dosage of total 6g (3g twice daily) of MSM or placebo for 26 weeks. Compared to placebo, the MSM group showed significant improvement in physical symptoms and performance of daily living activities.

 

Study 3: In a clinical trial, 22 healthy adults were randomised to take either OptiMSM® or a placebo at 3g/day for 21 days before running a half marathon and two days after. Pain levels were recorded using a 100 mm Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for both joint and muscle pain. OptiMSM® supplementation for 3 weeks reduced post-exercise joint and muscle pain compared to placebo.

 Study 4: Boswellia serrata extract (50mg/kg) was administered to subjects for 21 days after the induction of arthritis (joint inflammation). When compared to control, Boswellia-treated group was found to be significantly decreased in edema (swelling) volume (p < 0.01). The study concluded that Boswellia serrata could be an effective adjuvant for arthritis management.

 Study 5: Subjects with paw pain and arthritic ankle were orally administered piperine at 20 and 100 mg/kg/day for 8 days which resulted in significantly reduced pain and arthritic symptoms. Furthermore,  piperine was also shown to significantly reduce the inflammatory area in the ankle joints. These results suggest that piperine could suppress inflammation and pain for those with joint problems.

3) Protect healthy joint structures

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who experienced joint pain showed higher levels of serum hyaluronic acid1, suggesting an outflow from cartilaginous tissue. In this study, healthy adults with knee pain who consumed 100 mg/day of Boswellin® Super for 8 weeks showed lower levels of serum hyaluronic acid than those in the placebo group. This suggests the potential use of Boswellin® Super in protecting cartilage and alleviating pain in rheumatoid arthritis.

4) Synergistic benefits of combined ingredients

a) Curcumin and Boswellia extract

Study 1: In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 201 patients with osteoarthritis (OA) were orally administered placebo, curcumin (Curcuma longa) or its combination with boswellic acid (Boswellia serrata) daily for 12 weeks and their conditions were evaluated at baseline and week 12. Both preparations resulted in a reduction of pain-related symptoms, but a combination of curcumin and boswellic acid was more effective, presumably due to synergistic effects of curcumin and boswellic acid.

Study 2: A combination of turmeric and boswellia extracts were also shown to be more effective in reducing pain than NSAID, which is a drug commonly prescribed for joint disorders. 

In a clinical trial, osteoarthritic patients (age 18 - 65 years) were orally administered a CB formulation consisted of 350mg Curcuma longa  (turmeric) extract (containing 70% curcumin, 17% demethoxycurcumin, 3.5% bisdemethoxycurcumin and 7.5% turmeric essential oils) and 150mg Boswellia serrata extract (containing 75% boswellic acids and 10% AKBA) in 500mg hard gelatin capsule twice daily or NSAID 100mg capsule twice daily for 12 weeks. The turmeric + Boswellia formulation was found to be more successful than NSAID for symptom scoring and clinical examination.

b) Curcumin and BioPerine®

Following oral administration, curcumin showed poor absorption resulting in low blood concentration (traces) and most of them are excreted in the faeces. However, several studies have shown that the presence of BioPerine® (an extract from black pepper fruits Piper nigrum) helped increase the bioavailability of Curcumin.

Study 1: In a test, curcumin concentration in blood serum was shown to increase significantly at 1 and 2 hours following administration of a combination of curcumin and BioPerine®.

Study 2: In a clinical trial, 10 healthy volunteers were first administered 2000 mg curcumin, followed by a two-week break before a second administration of 2000 mg of curcumin and BioPerine® (20 mg) combination. BioPerine® was shown to enhance the bioavailability of curcumin with curcumin serum concentration increased by 20-fold or 2000% compared to curcumin alone. BioPerine® inhibits metabolism and elimination in intestine and liver and thus, increasing the bioavailability of curcumin.

a) Support healthy blood glucose

Tetrahydrocurcumin (THC) helps stimulate pancreatic β-cells, which play a vital role in the production and secretion of hormone that regulates blood glucose levels. Research showed that oral administration of THC (80 mg/kg body weight) to diabetic rats for 45 days resulted in a significant reduction in blood glucose and a significant increase in the hormone that regulates blood glucose levels, indicating the antidiabetic effect of THC.

b) Support healthy blood lipids

High blood lipid or hyperlipidemia is an associated complication of diabetes. In this study, oral administration of THC (80 mg/kg body weight) to diabetic rats for 45 days resulted in a significant reduction of serum and liver cholesterol, triglycerides, free fatty acids, phospholipids, HMG-CoA reductase activity, very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels and an increase of high-density lipoprotein (HDL). It is important to note that THC has more potent anti-hyperlipidemic effects, compared to the same dose of curcumin.

c) Support anti-ageing by anti-glycation

Glycation is a chemical process in which sugar, such as glucose is attached to human proteins or lipids, leading to the formation of high reactive Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) (proteins or lipids that become glycated). AGEs are a contributing factor in aging and in the development or worsening of many diseases, such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, kidney disease or Alzheimer’s disease etc.

In this study, THC reduced the extent of glycation and AGEs formation measured in tail tendon of diabetic rats, indicating its potential as an anti-glycation compound.

d) Protect liver health

Oral administration of THC significantly hindered the occurrence of liver damage as observed from reduction of levels of serum aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and bilirubin. These findings showed that THC could effectively protect against liver damage. Besides, THC provides a better protection when compared to reference drug Silymarin. 

e) Support healthy and radiant skin

MSM is an organic sulfur that has long been associated with skin health. It involves in skin physiological processes, including the synthesis of collagen and hyaluronic acid. Besides, MSM also helps reduce inflammation, which could deteriorate skin cells and lead to signs of premature aging, such as wrinkles. In this study, 63 female participants aged 35 to 59 years old were orally administered 1000mg OptiMSM® every morning with or without food for 16 weeks. Data was collected before treatment (baseline) and every 4 weeks during the course of the study. Compared to baseline, oral administration of OptiMSM® results in significant improvement of facial wrinkles, skin texture, firmness, elasticity and hydration. This suggests that OptiMSM® could help protect against premature skin ageing.

1. Ageing
Ageing people are susceptible to soreness and aches when they climb stairs, walk or exercise. Natural deterioration of the body can lead to cartilage loss and inflammation which results in a vicious cycle of joint pain.

2. Daily Walking
A lifetime of walking can cause wear and tear on the cartilage, the synovium can become inflamed and thickened. This leads to cartilage loss which causes the bones to rub against each other and resulting in pain, swelling and reduced range of motion.

3. High-impact exercises
Though exercises are good for health, they can also stress the joints. High-impact exercises such as soccer, running, hockey, etc, are likely to cause injuries to the joints, leading to inflammation and damage to the cartilage. This may result in severe pain and limited range of motion.

4. Overweight
Overweight individuals are at higher risk of developing joint problem as their weight would stress and wear out the joint cartilage, and leading to inflammation. Repeated cycles of inflammation worsens the cartilage loss and develop into chronic joint pain and swelling.

5. Oxidative Stress
Oxidative stress arises due to an imbalance between free radical production and antioxidant protection. Inflammation triggered by oxidative stress can induce cartilage damage, causing joints to become painful and stiff, with a reduced range of movement.

Problems Associated with Long-Term Use of

Medication for Pain Relief

Readily available nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen are the most-used medications to ease joint pain, stiffness and swelling. Nonetheless, the use of NSAIDs is commonly associated with gastrointestinal side effects (abdominal pain, ulcers, bleeding etc). Even worse, these medications have been suggested to increase the rate of cartilage breakdown and speed up the need for joint replacement (Journal of Prolotherapy 2(1): 305-322 (2010)).

Boswellin® Super Bowsellia Extract - 30% AKBA

Curcumin C3 Reduct® Turmeric Root Extract
Turmeric is a spice and medicinal herb popularly used in India to treat joint inflammation, sprains, swelling caused by injury, asthma and allergic conditions. Curcumin C3 Reduct® is extracted from the dried rhizomes (underground stems) of turmeric (Curcuma longa) (final extract ratio 100:1) and standardised for a minimum 95% tetrahydrocurcuminoids (THCs).

Research showed that THC can be absorbed more easily from the gastrointestinal tract compared to curcumin (J Nutr. 2001. 31: 2090-2095). The curcumin ingested will be converted by E. coli in the human intestines into tetrahydrocurcumin before absorption and the resulting THC (and not curcumin) is the one that is responsible for various biological functions associated with curcumin in the human body. 1) Support joint comfort & active mobility
In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 47 healthy adults with knee pain were randomised to consume a daily capsule containing either 100 mg/day of Boswellin® Super Boswellia serrata extract or a placebo for 8 weeks. Their knee pain was evaluated at baseline, 4 weeks and 8 weeks intervention. Compared with baseline (before treatment), the group consuming Boswellin® Super showed significant improvement in knee-pain relief after 8 weeks of intervention.

 

2) Support healthy inflammatory response

Study 1: Leukotrienes are inflammatory molecules produced by enzyme 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO). In this vitro study, boswellic acid AKBA was found to inhibit 5-LO inflammatory activity, thereby suppressing the production of leukotrienes and inflammatory response.

Study 2: Both curcumin and THC showed potent anti-inflammatory effects at low doses, but THC was effective at a much lower dose. This implies that THC (Curcumin C3 Reduct®) is more effective than curcumin (Curcumin C3 Complex®) in supporting healthy inflammatory response.

Study 2: Curcuminoid is a strong antioxidant with potent anti-inflammatory property, thus, may be helpful in the treatment of OA.In a randomised, double-blind and placebo-controlled trial, 40 patients with mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis were administered either 3 capsules of Curcumin C3 Complex® formulation (500 mg Curcumin C3 Complex®* and 5 mg BioPerine® combination per capsule) or placebo daily for a period of 6 weeks. Supplementation with Curcumin C3 Complex® - BioPerine® resulted in significant improvements in systemic oxidative stress biomarkers, which further validates antioxidant effects of curcuminoids in OA. Curcumin C3 Complex® - BioPerine® reduces oxidative stress in osteoarthritis.
