Increase haemoglobin levels

In this double-blind study, 34 anemic school children were orally administered 10 mg ferrous sulfate per kilogram body weight daily for 3 months. Their blood profile and learning achievement data were collected before and after the treatment period. The results showed that iron supplementation resulted in remarkable improvement to the levels of haemoglobin (protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen), hemocrit (proportion of red blood cells in blood) and transferrin saturation. Transferrin is a type of protein that binds and transports iron throughout the body. Normal transferrin saturation is 15% to 50%, with transferrin saturation less than 15% indicates iron deficiency, while more than 50% suggests iron overload. In addition, iron supplementation increases the learning achievement scores of the school children. These findings suggest the beneficial effects of iron supplementation on hemoglobin levels and learning ability of school children. 

 

 

 

Improve endurance

In this double-blind study, 42 iron-depleted, nonanemic women aged 18 to 33 years old were orally administered 100 mg ferrous sulfate or placebo daily for 6 weeks. For the final 4 weeks of the study, subjects were trained for 30 minutes daily and 5 days per week at 75-85% of the maximum heart rate. 

Compared to placebo group, iron supplementation increased serum ferritin levels. Ferritin is a blood protein that contains iron and ferritin test reveals the amounts of iron stores in the body. In addition, iron supplementation resulted in significant decrease in 15-km cycle ergometer time trial after 4 weeks of exercise training, which could be partially attributed to increase in serum ferritin and haemoglobin levels. These results suggest iron supplementation improves physical performance and endurance in iron-depleted women. 
 

Fight fatigue

In this study, 198 nonanemic iron-deficient women (aged 18 – 53 years) with unexplained fatigue with low ferritin were orally administered ferrous sulfate (80 mg of elemental iron daily) or placebo for 12 weeks. Their fatigue condition was assessed using the Current ad Past Psychological Scale and biological markers were measured at 6 and 12 weeks. Compared to placebo, iron supplementation significantly decreased the mean score on the Current and Past Psychological Scale for fatigue, and increased hemoglobin and ferritin levels. These findings suggest the beneficial effects of iron supplementation in relieving fatigue in nonanemic iron-deficient women. 

 

 

Improve cognitive function

In this study, adolescent girls with non-anaemic iron deficiency were orally administered iron supplementation, which is 650 mg ferrous sulfate twice daily or placebo for 8 weeks. The effects of iron supplementation were assessed by questionnaires, haematological and cognitive test before and after supplementation. Iron supplementation significantly improved the iron status, as well as verbal learning and memory, which were assessed using The Hopkins Verbal Learning Test (HVLT). These findings suggest the beneficial effects of iron supplementation on adolescent girls. 

 

 

Improve work performance

In this study, 80 iron-deficient, nonpregnant women were orally administered ferrous sulfate (60 or 120 mg Fe per day) or placebo for 12 weeks. Their energy expenditure was estimated during 3 days by heart rate (HR) recording, while production efficiency (PE) was calculated as the ratio of productivity to energy expenditure. 
Iron supplementation significantly increased hemoglobin and serum ferritin levels. In addition, the heart rate at work decreased significantly in iron-treated group, which implies a higher degree of physical fitness and energy expenditure. Furthermore, production efficiency and productivity increased significantly in the iron-treated group. These findings suggest that iron supplementation improved work performance by allowing the same amount of work to be done at a lower energy cost.

 

Improve mood

In this study, 70 non-anemc women with postpartum depression (PPD) were orally administered 50 mg elemental iron daily or placebo for 6 weeks, started from one week after delivery, and their improvement of PPD symptoms were compared. Compared to placebo group, ferritin was significantly higher and rate of iron deficiency was significantly lower in the iron-treated group. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was used to identify possible postpartum depression. The EPDS score was significantly decreased in the iron-treated group (p < 0.001), but not in the placebo group (p = 0.13). The improvement rate for PPD was significantly higher in the iron-treated group than placebo. These findings suggest that early iron supplementation in women with PPD significantly improves iron stores and depression symptoms.
