1. Complement cancer treatments
Yunzhi (Turkey tail) mushrooms may be an adjunct to immunotherapy and treatments. A promising natural remedy, this medicinal mushroom contains two of the best-known polysaccharides-protein complexes with maximal therapeutic benefits - Polysaccharide Krestin (PSK) and polysaccharopeptide (PSP). PSP and PSK have the potential to suppress abnormal growth with its immune-boosting properties. Turkey tail extract may help support cancer treatment and complement other anti-cancer treatment plan.

Study 1:
A review study found that cancer patients given 1g to 3.6g of yunzhi (turkey tail) mushroom daily along with standard conventional anti-cancer treatment had a significant survival advantage as compared with conventional treatment alone. This is especially so for certain types of cancer (breast cancer, gastric cancer or colorectal cancer). Patients given Yunzhi (turkey tail) demonstrates a 9% absolute reduction in 5-year mortality, resulting in one additional patient alive for every 11 patients treated (Recent Pat Inflamm Allergy Drug Discov. 6(1): 78-87 (2012)).

Study 2:
In this animal test, mice were treated with 3 doses of natural anticancer glucan extracted from yunzhi (turkey tail) (40, 100, 200 mg/kg body weight) for 9 days. Results showed a significant increase (p < 0.01) in relative spleen and thymus weight and a decrease (p < 0.01) in tumor weight at the doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg, as well as an increase in immune cell activity (macrophage phagocytosis). Spleen and thymus are important immune system organs. Besides, in vitro study showed the glucans extracted from turkey tail reduced proliferation of S-180 murine Sarcoma cancer cell line. These findings suggest anti-tumor activity of Turkey tai’s glucan via its immunomodulation activity.

Study 3:
PSK from turkey tail mushrooms was found to suppress the growth and spread of human colon cancer cells. Development of new blood vessels (known as angiogenesis) can facilitate the spreading of cancer cells to new areas of the body.

In an in vitro study, colon cancer cells were cultured with and without PSK for 48 hours. In the following days, the cells were cultured for 2 days at 37oC in separate mediums. Compared to the medium of the non-treated colon cancer cell lines, the medium of the PSK-treated colon cancer cell lines revealed inhibition of elongation. These findings suggest that PSK helps suppress angiogenesis in colon cancer cells and it could be potentially used as an immunotherapeutic agent for the treatment of colon cancer.

2. Manage bacterial infection
Yunzhi (turkey tail) is one of the most researched medicinal mushrooms for its medicinal properties. This mushroom has been suggested to provide protection against bacterial and viral infections. When the body is invaded by invaded by bacteria or viruses, B cells (a specific type of white blood cells) produce antibodies. Yunzhi (turkey tail) encourages the body to produce more B cells in a process known as B-cell activation, thereby protecting the bodies from infections.

In bacterial infections, Staphylococcus aureus is a major bacterial human pathogen that is frequently found in the upper respiratory tract and on the skin. It causes a wide range of clinical manifestations, such as boils and painful rashes. Salmonella infection is another common bacterial disease that affects the gastrointestinal tract. Salmonella enterica is known to cause inflammation of gastrointestinal tract, enteric fever and blood poisoning in humans worldwide.

In this in vitro study, yunzhi (turkey tail) extract was found to suppress the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella enterica. This suggests that yunzhi (turkey tail) extract can potentially be used to develop nutraceuticals or drugs effective against pathogenic microorganisms.

3. Manage viral infection
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common viral infection of the reproductive tract. This infection passes between people via skin-to-skin contact and sexually active women and men may be infected at some point in their lives. Symptoms of HPV infection includes genital wart or cervical cancer.

In this clinical trial, 41 patients who were tested positive for human papillomavirus (HPV) were orally administered Trametes versicolor (TV) and Ganoderma lucidum (GL) for 2 months. Results showed a significant clearance equals to 88% (p < 0.001) after 2 months, supporting the potential application of the medicinal mushrooms in the management of HPV infection (Int J Med Mushrooms 16(5): 497-498 (2014)).

4. Improve physical performance
Many studies support the anti-fatigue effects of medicinal mushrooms. The presence of bioactive constituents in medicinal mushrooms, including polysaccharides, peptides, phenolic compounds and triterpenoids, may mitigate fatigue via its effects on muscular, cardiovascular, hormone and immune system. Hence, medicinal mushroom may contribute to improving athletic performance.

In this animal test, male mice were orally administered an extract from turkey tail mycelium for 4 weeks at 0, 615, 1230 or 3075 mg/kg/day. To evaluate exercise performance and anti-fatigue activity, their forelimb grip strength, endurance swim time, and levels of physical fatigue-associated parameters serum lactate were recorded. Compared to control, administration of the extract at 615, 1230 or 3075 mg/kg/day was found to significantly increased forelimb grip strength by 1.20-, 1.18- and 1.23-fold, respectively. The accumulation of lactate causes fatigue in muscles. The levels of serum lactate after the 15-minute swimming exercise was reduced significantly by 22%, 25% and 41%, respectively. These findings suggest that supplementation of extract from yunzhi (turkey tail) mycelium helps improve exercise performance and reduce physical fatigue.

5. Improve gut health
The gut hosts about 100 trillion live microorganisms that promote normal gastrointestinal function, fights off infection and regulates the immune system. The gut wall houses 70% of the cells that make up the immune system. Hence, keeping a healthy balance of beneficial bacteria in the gut is crucial for maintaining a strong immune system. Like most mushrooms, turkey tail contains prebiotics, that helps nourish good bacteria in the gut and maintain healthy digestion.

In this clinical trial, 22 healthy volunteers were orally administered 3600 mg polysaccharopeptide (prebiotic) from turkey tail (PSP) or control for 8 weeks. Their stool specimens were analysed over the 8 weeks. Consistent with its activity as a prebiotic, the group administered with PSP observed beneficial changes in gut bacteria and suppressed growth of the possibly problematic Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Shigella bacteria. These findings suggest that yunzhi (turkey tail) may be helpful in keeping a balance of gut bacteria and thus, improving overall health.

6. Support weight management
Yunzhi (turkey tail) provides all the essential nutrients that the body needs, while balancing the body’s calorie intake which aids in weight management without depriving the body of the vital nutritional content.

In this animal test, mice fed with a high-fat diet (HFD) were orally administered protein-bound β-glucan (PBG) from yunzhi (turkey tail). PBG helped reduce obesity and metabolic inflammation. It markedly increased the abundance of Akkermansia muciniphila, a common gut bacterium that helps maintain gut lining and possess many health benefits. This beneficial bacterium helps lose more belly fat and gain better control of blood sugar. PBG from turkey tail also alters host physiology and creates an intestinal microenvironment that is favourable for A. muciniphila colonization. These findings suggest the potential use of PBG from turkey tail as a novel obesity treatment.

7. Manage diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which the body does not respond well to insulin (insulin resistance), resulting in unusual high blood glucose levels. If left untreated, high blood glucose levels can lead to disorders in the circulatory, nervous and immune systems. In diabetic subjects, yunzhi (turkey tail) helps lower blood glucose levels, reduce insulin resistance and promote better insulin sensitivity.

In this animal test, the anti-diabetic and anti-insulin-resistance effects of yunzhi (turkey tail) extract was investigated. The yunzhi (turkey tail) extract significantly reduced blood glucose levels, while increased glucose consumption in insulin-resistant cells. In addition, turkey tail extract also enhanced insulin-regulated glucose uptake into fat and muscle cells. These findings suggest the beneficial effects of yunzhi (turkey tail) in managing diabetes and insulin resistance.
