1. Improve immune system
In this clinical trial, 10 healthy individuals (18 – 45 years old) were orally administered 500 mg propolis in the morning for 13 days to determine the changes of cytokine (TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8). Cytokines are proteins secreted by immune cells, vital for regulating immune. Results showed that cytokine secretion increased significantly during the 13-day therapy without undesirable side effects. This concludes that propolis could help enhance the immune system when the immune response is insufficient (Forsch Komplementarmed. 6(5): 256-260 (1999)).

In this clinical trial, subjects were orally administered propolis extract for 90 days; their oxidative status and modulation of lipids were evaluated at baseline (0) and on the 45th and 90th day. Compared to placebo, administration of propolis is linked to an increase of glutathione (GSH) levels and a decrease in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels. GSH is one of the body’s most important and potent antioxidants and TBARS is a measure of oxidative stress. These findings suggested the potential benefits of propolis on oxidative status.
