What is heme iron?

Heme iron is a highly absorbable form of iron from animal sources like meat, poultry and fish.

Who should take AFC Heme Iron?

AFC Heme Iron is highly recommended for women, athletes, and elders. Those with heavy menstruation and those currently pregnant have higher iron needs. Additionally, individuals who undergo surgery or are donating blood require iron to replace the red blood cells lost.

When is the best time to consume AFC Heme Iron?

AFC Heme Iron is best consumed on an empty stomach, in divided dosages. You can take 1 capsule before each meal. Please take note that you should have least 30 minutes interval before/or after taking coffee and tea, as they significantly reduce iron absorption in the body.

Does AFC Heme Iron cause constipation?

Unlike other iron supplements, AFC Heme Iron does not result in constipation. With the natural prune extract, it even helps regulate bowel movements. In addition, it is gentle on the stomach and does not cause stomach irritation as well.

Can I take AFC Heme Iron together with other supplements?

Iron can easily compete with other minerals for body’s absorption. You can combine AFC Heme Iron together with zinc, vitamin E, vitamin A and B complex supplements to enhance the absorption of iron. Do not take iron supplements together with calcium and fiber supplements, as iron and calcium compete with each other, rendering less absorption. Additionally, fiber may also hinder the absorption of minerals.

How does iron work in our body?

The crucial role of iron is oxygen transportation. Oxygen is involved in the integral steps of energy production.  The brain utilizes a significant amount of oxygen for normal functions. Oxygen is transported from the lung to different parts of the body via red blood cells. Each red blood cell contains several hundred thousands of hemoglobin molecules.

Iron is very important for the production of hemoglobin in your blood and for supplying oxygen to red blood cells. Thus, having sufficient iron in the body is crucial for healthy, functioning red blood cells.

How is oxygen transported?

The human body is an intricate transport network. Red blood cells travel in the blood, picking up oxygen from the lung, and transferring it to all the various body cells.  A crimson red hue signifies oxygenated red blood cells that are carrying oxygen. When that oxygen is released, red blood cells turn into purple red, where they travel back towards the heart and lung to replenish the oxygen supply.

At least 1 in 5 women has iron deficiency!
Iron is an important trace mineral in human nutrition but it is very difficult for our body to absorb iron efficiently from dietary sources. Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional shortfall, at least 1 in 5 women is affected with iron deficiency.

Two simple checks

1. Check your nails
a) Place one hand flat on the table with palm facing down.
b) Press firmly on one fingernail to force all the blood out of the underlying nail bed.
c) Remove the pressure.
d) Check if the rosy pink colour returns after you release the pressure.
e) A pale nail bed may indicate iron deficiency.

2. Check your eyes
a) Looking in a mirror.
b) Check the inside of the lower eyelid by gently pulling down the lid with a finger, where it should be red or pink.
c) If the colour is pale or almost white, you may have an iron deficiency.

The colour is red > normal:

The colour is pale > iron deficiency:

Iron deficiency can result in multiple symptoms!

Tiredness, a general lack of energy and lower stamina
Dizziness and headaches
Breathlessness and rapid heart beat
Decreased work performance, lowered concentration and focus
Lowered cognitive function affecting attention span, memory, and learning ability
Difficulty maintaining body temperature
Decreased immunity, and higher susceptibility to infections
Thinning hair, dry hair, brittle nails, and pale complexion

If you experience above symptoms, you may be lacking iron in your diet!

The source of your iron supplement matters

AFC Heme Iron

The addition of Prune Extract helps increase iron absorption and prevents constipation. Gentle on the stomach, AFC Heme Iron the most comprehensive iron supplement for superior absorption.

Why is iron vital for good health?
Iron is an essential daily nutrient that performs multiple functions for maintaining good health.  Iron plays an important role in your everyday needs:

Oxygen transport and red blood cell formation
Oxygen is essential for cellular functions that we obtain when we breathe in. Iron delivers the oxygen from lung to all other body cells and facilitates in oxygen storage in muscle.
Energy production
Iron involves in the process of converting nutrients into energy.
Brain health
Iron deficiency may impact the lower brain functions. Poor attention span, lower concentration, impaired learning may occur as a result of iron deficiency
Biological activity
Iron is a constituent in more than hundreds of enzymes and cofactors in enzyme reactions, aiding in energy metabolism, DNA synthesis and protection against free radicals
Immune defense
Concentration and activity of white blood cells are found to be decreased in individuals with iron deficiency, and this affects the immune defense system within our body
Hair, skin and nail
Hair loss, and unhealthy hair, brittle nails, and pale complexion are associated with iron deficiency

Are you at risk of iron deficiency?
Iron is lost by the body through various ways including urination, defecation, perspiration and exfoliation of old skin cells. Certain groups of people are at a higher risk towards iron deficiency:

Women Excess blood loss during menstruation leads to a higher demand for iron among women

Pregnant women Iron needs may double during pregnancy to account for the increased blood volume, and to supply the needs of the growing fetus

Athletes Iron supplies oxygen to all body cells and muscles. Rigorous activity demands more oxygen to keep up with the increased needs

Seniors Iron deficiency among the elders can be associated with diseases and decreased food intake. The reduced gastric secretion may also lead to short supply of iron and its poor absorption

Surgery and blood donation Blood loss through surgery or blood donation requires a higher intake of iron to help the body make new red blood cells

Vegetarians Vegetarians may have problems obtaining sufficient iron due to inadequate iron intake, and/or the lower absorption rate of iron from plant sources
